If you are an anime/manga fan, then you probably have heard of the Demon Slayer series by Koyoharu Gotouge. This series has taken the world by storm, and for good reason – it has beautiful animation and quirky, likeable characters.

If you haven’t heard of or read this series here’s what it’s about:

In Taisho-era Japan, kindhearted Tanjiro Kamado makes a living selling charcoal. But his peaceful life is shattered when a demon slaughters his entire family. His little sister Nezuko is the only survivor, but she has been transformed into a demon herself!

But what do you read after it?

For me, I love to recommend manga’s that newer readers may have missed, but I also like to share recent releases that have the same characteristics we loved about Demon Slayer. With supernatural themes and sword fighting there are a plethora of manga’s to choose from.

If you’re not familiar with some of the older manga’s you might be interested in these titles:

Blue Exorcist book jacketBlue Exorcist by Kazue Kato

It’s about a boy with demon blood in his veins who attends an Exorcist Academy to learn how to defeat demons. Trying to keep his demonic linage a secret while also releasing his demon powers when drawing his sword proves to be a difficult task and keeps readers wondering if he can or cannot handle it.

This one checks a lot of the boxes in similarities with Demon Slayer. Demons, swords, academy setting, and similar family dynamics.

Attack on Titan book jacketAttack on Titan by Hajime Isayama

Taking place in a post-apocalyptic setting, humans hide behind fortresses of walled cities as giant humanoid Titans roam the planet laying waste to civilization. the story follows Eren Yeager, who vows to exterminate the Titans after they bring about the destruction of his hometown and the death of his mother.

Titans may not be demons, but they are monstrous creatures, and the characters use various forms of weapons and combat to fight against the onslaught of their attack on the city.

Some newer Mangas that fans love:

Chainsaw man book jacketChainsaw Man by Tatsuki Fujimoto

Devil hunter Denji dies on duty and comes back to life, all thanks to his pet devil Pochita. This revival to life transforms him into something else entirely – Chainsaw Man; Working[BW1] [C2] [C3]  with a government agency focused on fighting Devils - creatures born from human fears. Transforming parts of his body into chainsaws to fight these creatures and send them back to Hell.

Demons (‘Devils’) and a society to fight against them, scratches the itch left after reading Demon Slayer.

Jujitsu Kaisen book jacketJujitsu Kaisen by Gege Akutami

In a world plagued by cursed spirits that feed on humans there is a school of jujutsu sorcerers taught how to fight and defeat them.

This story follows Yuta Okkotsa, high school student and jujutsu sorcerer in training who is trying to learn exorcism and combat skills to confront his friend who was turned into a cursed spirit - but he’s pressed for time.

This story arc has a lot of similarities for me. With the supernatural spirits behaving like the demons from Demon Slayer, the loved one being turned into one of the supernatural beasts, a school to learn combat skills, and the story following that journey; what more could we ask for?

Here are a few more tittles to check out if you enjoyed Demon Slayer:
