It’s an age-old question: which was better, the book or the movie? As any good Library staff member will tell you, the book is always (usually) better. But just because we know the movie likely won’t live up to the book (we’re looking at you Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief) it doesn’t make us any less excited when we hear that one of our favourite titles is being made into a movie or a TV show. And, by excited we mean we may even do a little happy dance.

Check out my list of the most dance-worthy book adaptations making their way to the big, and small, screen very soon!

The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han
The Summer I turned Pretty Book Jacket

There is so much to love about this adaptation. For one, it’s a beloved YA title by an even more beloved author, Miss Jenny Han herself who brought you the To All the Boys series. Second, the cast is an exciting mix of seasoned actors like Rachel Blanchard, and newcomers Lola Tung, Christopher Briney and Gavin Cassalegno. Finally, this series is getting a lot of attention thanks to its title song, a re-record of This Love by Taylor Swift.

The Summer I Turned Pretty follows Isabel "Belly" Conklin, who ends up in a love triangle with her childhood friends Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher.

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
Where the Crawdads Sing Book jacket

This is likely one of the most anticipated releases this year and if you haven’t read the book, it should be number one on your TBR pile!

Where the Crawdads Sing is a story about Kya, A born naturalist who takes life's lessons from the land, learning the real ways of the world from the dishonest signals of fireflies. But while she has the skills to live in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world—until the unthinkable happens. (publishers’ description)

While it may seem like this book is about the murder of a local boy, Chase Andrews, it’s actually the story of how isolation influences behaviour and how we are forever shaped by the child within us.

I would be remiss if I didn’t also add that our girl Taylor wrote the lead song for this movie as well; Carolina, whose release is as much anticipated as the movie itself among Swifties.

The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

I am really excited about this title being adapted for TV, mostly because for me the 2009 movie starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana never lived up to my vision of this book. But also because Rose Leslie, from HBO’s Game of Thrones, is playing Claire opposite Theo James as Henry in this limited series on HBO!

The Time Traveler’s Wife is a beautiful love story of a girl and boy who can’t stop slipping in and out of time but manage to make a life together anyway.

Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney
Conversations with Friends Book Jacket

After the success of the adaptation of Rooney’s Normal People in 2020, it should come as no surprise that her breakout novel would also get the Hollywood treatment.

Conversations with Friends is about two college students in Dublin, Frances and Bobbi, who after dating in high school forge a strange and unexpected connection with a married couple.

It seems that we’re playing 6 degrees of separation with Taylor Swift in this post because her long-time partner Joe Alwyn plays Nick, the leading male in this series airing on Hulu.

We’re also very excited about these Movies coming out sometime in 2023
Did you know these already released movies were based on books?
