About Us

Peterborough Healthy Families was established in 2001/2002 as a partnership between Kinark Child and Family Services and the Peterborough Public Library, with a goal to improve the well being of children and families in Peterborough City and County. Formal recognition came with the 2005 Minister's Award for Innovation, which recognizes new ideas in public library service. Over the years, the initiative has grown to incorporate the assistance of a number of advisory agencies from the community. See our Partners page for a listing of these agencies.

Located in the Children's Department at the Peterborough Public Library, the Healthy Families Collection includes: books, audio books, and DVDs that provide answers to questions on a wide variety of parenting subjects such as Attention Deficit Disorder, Bullies/Teasing, Behaviour Problems and Separation and Divorce. For a full listing of topics, check out Resources page.

City of Peterborough residents may borrow material free of charge from the Healthy Families Collection with their library card. If you do not live in the City of Peterborough, you may become a "non-resident" borrower by paying a nominal fee. Interlibrary Loan is available free of charge for the books in the Healthy Families Collection through any local public library in Ontario.

In addition to the collection and the web site, a number of engaging public presentations are offered throughout the year on a variety of topics relating to parenting, children's and youths' physical, mental and emotional health.

The Healthy Families Committee is very grateful for the ongoing support of the partnering organizations who help to make everything that we offer possible.
